Portsmouth Island Trip

A Trip To Portsmouth Island, North Carolina

Welcome to a seashore ghost town
Welcome to a seashore ghost town
In the 18th Century, Portsmouth was either the most populous or second-most populous city in North Carolina. Ships wanting to enter the Sound often needed deeper waters than existed at the time, and so they'd dock at Portsmouth's harbor, where they were protected from the ocean as they awaited their cargo to be offloaded to smaller ships to finish their trip to the mainland. As economics changed, Portsmouth slowly faded away. Nowadays it's mostly populated by shorebirds and mosquitos.
