Florida Waterbirds

A Trip to Canaveral National Seashore

I seem to spend my entire spring in Orlando, and I always intend to see the good things near it, but I never seem to get around to it. So in early May 2008, I rented a car and drove from Orlando to Canaveral National Seashore to see what I could see (and photograph what I could photograph) in terms of near-the-sea wildlife. My biggest goal was to see and photograph a Roseate Spoonbill, but I was perfectly willing to take anything that I got. Along the way, I got a few nice snaps -- but that'd be up to you to decide. Here's what I found...

Roseate Spoonbill
Here's a bird that I've seen pictures of but never actually seen in person. I'd just about given up on seeing one at Canaveral and so I took a turn that would lead me back to the highway... and there were two of them sitting on a low tree. I knew that their color varied depending on their diet, but I never imagined that (1) they'd have a green head and (2) those alien red eyes. Zoom into that head, and you'll get an idea about where some SF moviemakers get their ideas for aliens.
