"Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permissions error on the destination volume."

This is most bizarre. Mac users using MAC Office 2011 on Lion connect to a Windows 2008r2 share via SMB. The windows share contains dozens of folders all with different file permissions.

The user can create a new word document and save it into a folder on the Windows share that they have "full control" over BUT if they quit word, re-open it, re-open the document then go to save Word will say "Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permissions error on the destination volume."

Any ideas?

Yes.
Someone here looked at it and it was a problem with spotlight. It indexes the file, and you can't touch it during indexing. Something like that.
