We have a sharepoint 2010 server that we will be hosting for a client. We are responsible only for the server hosting and data backups - no configuration. I am hoping to get this as "set it and forget it" as possible.

As this is a hyper-v guest, assuming we do a periodic backup of the VHD file will this, in conjunction with regular SQL backups, suffice as a backup strategy? The server itself should not be changing at all, correct - only the dB? We would backup the VHD again following windows/sharepoint updates (will avoid the latter like the plague most likely).

I have set a 10 GB limit on the content DB for now (will keep an eye on it for a while to gauge growth). Any other tips/ideas would be most welcome!

Hi Wes,
Short answer, in theory yes.

I take it there is only one application server in the farm.

The sharepoint databases reside on the SQL server and the SharePoint is on the WIN 2008 box?

It would be good to know the SP configuration, for your own peace of mind.

I deleted a wrong snapshot on my sharepoint application server once and re-building the app server and pointing to the databases is nowhere near as easy as you think it will be.

I have not looked at the backup options in 2010 but they look much better than 2007 which was all set spn command line *fury*

This gent appears to have a nice overview

It is all one box. It was originally installed thinking it would be a POC box so we did a standalone installation which installed SQL 2008 express. Now that I realize their intention is to take this box right into production, I've gone ahead and upgraded the SQL express instance to a standard 2008 r2 instance - that went smoothly enough. But it is all still contained on one box. I'd like to move the DBs to the D drive I created, but that process looks to be a bit hairier than I have time for right now...

In which case, I think you will be OK.

It would be nice to know the configuration, it just takes one ham fisted admin to change a setting and it all come crashing down.

You will have to watch it.
Had a really heafty SQL server crash this week at a VAR.
Seems like your on the right track but remember the SQL server is not a water heater. Run a SQL profile on the SQL server and check the frequent routines that are run simply by having Share Point running.
