Hello! I'm new in networking, so that's valid and for Server 2003! So I'll just start asking in hope to get to the more advanced topics! I have Server 2003 in the company where I work. I want to upgrade the network to a domain, but I am facing some problems. The first issue that seems problematic to me is that, we have other company which uses databases (Lotus) on our Server. Additionaly, few clerks in our company use those databases... So, if I activate the Active Directory on the Server, I am afraid that they will lose connection on the server, until they become part of the domain. So what should I do?

afaik there's no direct interaction with LN and AD.
However, be very aware that LN might use the same ports as AD, ldap jumps into mind. Better to use an additional server for AD. And.. 1 ad controller is none. Having 2 is recommended.
edit: And welcome to the forum |

Welcome. Best to test first.
But also remember that Windows 2003 DCs will run on most hardware if your short for cash.
You will go bonkers without a domain. I've seen the ugly and I've moved folks off of peer to peer networks.
You can really see the difference when the broadcast go down on the wire.

Many many thanks for the answers...
So, you suggest domain environment... And about the dynamism of creating the domain... After upgrading the server to a DC, what should the would be domain members know, so they become part of the domain? In other words, how would I administer those users? Every user has a user name and password, or there's more to it? I'm still not that convenient with the security issues... When do I make group policies and so? |

| I am in process of reading the book... I must say I found a lot of information, but you know, still when it takes to putting the knowledge in practice, it gets entangled a bit... OK, thanks anyway... |
