Just created a software RAID-1 and as long as the shadow volume (Disk 1) will not be used unless there is a failure, is it necessary to modify (or append) the Boot.Ini on the Primary or just create and modify the ERD accordingly in the event the Primary fails?

It's not necessary but it makes life a whole lot easier if you would prepare for a failure by adding a second entry in the boot.ini
