I've done my due diligence and can't find anything via Google on this irksome problem.
I have a client that has SBS 2008, and I am using the Windows Backup feature to back up their server every night. Whenever I apply MS updates to the server and reboot the backup stops working. The error I'm getting is that it's failing to find the specified backup device.
This ONLY happens after I install a round of updates to the server. They're not using Exchange (using Google Apps instead) for email. I'm backing up to an external 2TB drive hooked up via USB.
Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
Thanks!
Mike

First how do you fix it?
What is the hardware, server and USB drive, make, model etc.
When you say the backups fail after an update, have you checked just rebooting the server? I suspect the server hardware, is not recognising the USB drive for some reason. Hence the failure. I remember some time ago there was a published list of suitable USB devices for backups. |

Hi Joe -
I believe the last time I got it back up running I had to delete the drive manually (can't recall exactly how I did it) from the backup. I reformatted the external drive on another computer, gave it a different letter and name, and was able to get the backup going again by rebooting the server and setting it all up all over again.
Server is SBS 2008 SP2 (not R2), Intel Xeon quad core 2.5Ghz. Has 8 GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive (two 500GB hard drives set up as RAID 1). External HDD is Western Digital 2 TB drive....pretty sure it's 2 TB.
I've rebooted the server several times...still doesn't detect the external hard drive. I think you're right that the server isn't recognizing the USB drive, but for the life of me I can't figure out why it works fine UNTIL I apply Microsoft Updates and then reboot.
I ran Belarc Advisor on the server and in the "Drives" section it has the RAID array and CD/DVD drive listed. Under that it has this...
P ` [Hard drive] (2199.02 GB) -- drive 0, s/n \ ` 8 , Not SMART
To me this says the server is seeing the drive but the info on it is somehow garbled.
You got a link to the list of drives that supposedly work with Windows Backup?
Thanks!
Mike
PS - Saw the Notre Dame football game with Navy this past Saturday on TV. Ireland is *stunningly* beautiful!

Is the server a white label, or a Dell/ HP etc? Thinking firmware update.
Ignore Belarc and use disk management. The backup disk should be listed, with no drive letter assigned. It should also be listed on backup management.
As to the match, it was a beautiful weekend and therefore the place looks amazing. Check out the Dublin versus Mayo All Ireland Semi Final for a different football game. |

Server is from a local company here in Atlanta. I'm guessing that is what you meant by "white label."
I've used disk management - went there first. Rescanned for devices when I didn't find the external drive there. Nothing. I went into backup from the SBS console and the drive is still listed there. Unchecked it when I was re-setting up the backup and it wouldn't let me move to next screen when I unchecked the one drive that was listed as a backup location.
Oh, and doubt I'll be able to watch that match. :) I don't think it'll be shown here in the US. That stadium is beautiful though...wow. I really want to get over there sometime. My ancestors hail from there...

| I've heard of updates changing firewall rules. I don't know why that would affect updates but it might be worth a look. |

Hey Don -
Were it that simple. The firewall is off on the server and the Sonicwall I have in place hasn't changed a bit. I might try updating the firmware on the external drive....
Thanks!

No apologies necessary. I appreciate your help.
Thanks for the link. I'm fairly certain the backup drive is viewable in disk management. That is, when things aren't wonky like they are now. argh.
