Now that we're all running Windows 8 RTM (right?), hopefully someone can help me crack this particular nut.
Our work files are stored on an EMC NAS that emulates a Windows 2003 (non-R2) server. *Not* "runs", but "emulates". Currently, I'm finding that I cannot even find the server or the shares thereon from Windows 8. I *can* connect to a Windows 2008 R2 share just fine. I *can* ping the NAS just fine. I *cannot* navigate to \\NAS\ to see a list of shares (which I *could* do just fine on Windows 7).
I'm certain that his has something to do with Windows 8 coming with SMB 3.0 and have been looking for information on how to get Windows Vista/7/8 to permit/speak to connections with a lower version of SMB. Based on a few suggestions I've found, I've set the "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" in local policy to "Send LM & NTLM responses", but this has not changed anything:
"Windows can't find '\\NAS\'. Check the spelling and try again."
Well nuts ... talked with a storage guy and apparently its a problem with the NAS and has been fixed in more recent versions of the server software than we're currently running. I've included the EMC KB in case anyone else comes across this issue.

Environment: Product: VNX Unified/File Environment: EMC SW: VNX Operating Environment (OE) for File 7.0.x Environment: Product: Celerra Environment: EMC SW: NAS Code 6.0.x Problem: Windows 8 Preview Release unable to map CIFS Shares, System error 2148073478 has occurred. Problem: Windows 8 clients were unable to map EMC server shares. The net use command failed with system error 2148073478. Root Cause: Windows 8 Preview requires SMB Server Signing to be enabled for SMB Connections. The Group Policy Option for this is not enabled by default. The "Digitally Sign Communications (always) Enabled" is also referred to as "RequireSecuritySignature." Fix: The code has been fixed to support Windows 8 compatibility. This ensures that the Data Mover selectively checks an SMB2 request and signs the response even if the server was not configured to force signing. • Fixed in NAS code 6.0.55.3 and later • Fixed in VNX OE for File 7.0.52.1 and later For a patched version of nas.exe of NAS Code 5.6.52.x, 6.0.51.x, and VNX OE 7.0.51.x, please call the EMC Support Center.
