Hi all-
I have been making use of the Exchange 2010 logging features to try and track down problems. The question will be simple enough I think, but I need to set it up right first...
I've got a user who is not receiving REPLIES from a (just one) remote party. New emails from this sender come in fine, but REPLIES to my user's original emails do not. The remote replying side receives a bounce message. I'm not sure the bounce message is important in regard to my question, but for posterity's sake, it's a "550 5.7.1 This message does not comply with required standards" bounce message.
I'm looking at the Exchange log during the time period these emails were sent to us. I'm using the PowerShell command get-messagetrackinglog with the | fl switch. I see entries for the new messages we received, but the REPLIES that got bounced on the remote end are not there.
So my question is this... Say the reply DID REACH our mail server, and for some reason our mail server rejected the message. Would that event be in the get-messagetrackinglog log? I am assuming since there is NOTHING in the log for the bounced messages that OUR mail server never even SAW the message. If that's so, then there's nothing I can do on my end. However, I am not 100% certain whether or not it's possible that Exchange WOULD receive a message, refuse it for some reason, and NOT write an event to the get-messagetrackinglog log. (doesn't seem like logging would be much use if this it the case, though...).
The question itself is pretty simple, sorry to make this so long. In short, if Exchange 2010 refuses a message, will it at least write a RECEIVE entry to the get-messagetrackinglog log? The point of this thread is not to track down the problem itself, I just want to understand the tracking log better.
Thanks ~ k
