Ended up with a dirty shutdown yesterday afternoon and had to repair with eseutil /p. After the hours that took and defragging we could once again mount the stores and for a (very) brief period all was well. Now everything is working except receiving incoming mail and Activesync. All queues are sitting empty. Running smtp tests from Postini, it looks like everything is as it should be - port 25 is listening and responding, all mx records are intact. Where else do I troubleshoot this? Am exhausted, frustrated, and my thinking processes are questionable at best. Help?

Are you sure all services are running? Events in the Application Log?

Did you test with Telnet? Use http://support.microsoft.com/kb/153119 to drop a message to your server and then follow it in the Message Tracking Center.

Thank you for replying! Yes, I have checked smtp and it says all is well. However, in the event log this is returned: Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeTransport
Event Category: SMTP Protocol
Event ID: 7010
Date: 6/5/2012
Time: 9:22:04 AM
User: N/A
Computer: KANSAS
Description:
This is an SMTP protocol log for virtual server ID 1, connection #3. The client at "xx.xx.xx.113" sent a "rcpt" command, and the SMTP server responded with "503 5.5.2 Need Mail From: first ". The full command sent was "rcpt TO:<cindy.barnes@rci-safety.com>". This will probably cause the connection to fail.

For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

Then, there are a million Server ActiveSync errors because everyone is on the road this week depending on their smartphones for mail. Contacts and Calendar are syncing fine by the way. Email sends fine to the outside and we can send and receive internally.

Event ID 7010 points to the NIC, so I have tested that and it passes...
In the properties for the virtual smtp server there are 3 IP addresses listed - two of which are not valid ips on our domain, and the (All Unassigned) option was the active one. I don't remember setting that, thought I had chosen the valid IP, but the above error occurred once I had changed it to the valid IP and did the telnet test. I changed it back, tested again. Only error is with ActiveSync - EventID 3005 "Verify that the Exchange mailbox Server is working correctly.

Check this:

1. Open IIS Manager

2. Navigate to Websites -> right click on "Default web site" and click on properties.

3. On the web site tab click on advanced

4. Under "Multiple identities for this website" click on the default entry and click on edit

5. I made the following changes - IP address: (All Unassigned), TCP port:80, Host Header Value: "Blank"

6. click ok and restart IIS Admin Service (warning will disconnect clients) to be sure!

(from: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrmobility/thread/66a33f3a-d945-42e2-ac80-3e4244f9b258)

Make notes of your changes so you can revert them if necessary.

Well, that finally allowed the smtp test messages from postini to come through, but the rest of our outside mail is still sitting in postini. I'm rebooting the server again to see if that generated any errors I haven't seen. This all started with a reboot...seems Windows updates have begun clashing with our ESET Nod32 lately. We update, reboot and the server hangs at startup, takes a hard boot to get it back up. We solved this by going in and shutting of ESET before the update. Yesterday, the server was hanging if we moved too fast or looked at it wrong...so I turned off the service and rebooted. It hung anyway so I had to hold the power button in and do a hard boot. (I did wait 25 - 30 minutes for it to complete it's startup - usually takes 5 - 7). My cohort just got in and said when he restarted early this morning smtp would not start because of a missing folder. He added the folder and it started...this paints a different picture. Do I need to 'register' this folder? I am not terribly versed on this (in case that didn't show before... ;^) )

I had a similar issue with Eset and remove it. The problem went away and I switched to Kaspersky and have not seen problems since.

That is def going to happen soon! Management would like us to wait until our current license expires but I'm thinking it's accidently going to get corrupted before then...

Looks like some things have resolved, but Postini is still spooling our email. Does anyone know a way to kickstart this? We did go in and set it to start manually instead of automatically, then manually told it to send. 30 minutes later - nothing. Any ideas?

Spooling finally kicked in and started sending. Hopefully all is well - except for a couple of phones (naturally, one of them is mine) that refuse to sync and are generating pages of errors. On to the next page! Thanks for your help, Jazzy! I appreciate it more than I can say!! -cindy
