I'm seeing more and more issues with getting service packs installed on Win 2008 servers.
This error in particular.
Error: Error_SXS_Assembly_Not_Found (0x800736b3)

I'm using the sfc tool to scan for corrupted system files as per a KB from MSFT.
The options are:
SFC [/SCANNOW] [/VERIFYONLY] [/SCANFILE=<file>] [/VERIFYFILE=<file>]
[/OFFWINDIR=<offline windows directory> /OFFBOOTDIR=<offline boot directory>]

/SCANNOW Scans integrity of all protected system files and repairs files with
problems when possible.
/VERIFYONLY Scans integrity of all protected system files. No repair operation is
performed.
/SCANFILE Scans integrity of the referenced file, repairs file if problems are
identified. Specify full path <file>
/VERIFYFILE Verifies the integrity of the file with full path <file>. No repair
operation is performed.
/OFFBOOTDIR For offline repair specify the location of the offline boot directory
/OFFWINDIR For offline repair specify the location of the offline windows directory

Seems that there could be corrupted or updated system files that are not compatible. Now if Joe says, reinstall I'm going to flip, because I HATE reinstalling an OS on a server and going through a long build again.

Anyone get past this error yet?

Looks like some $%@!! cleared the SXS cache. Make sure you find and fire^W educate the guy. This server is now broken and unsupported. Two ways I know of to fix it:

1. reinstall ;-)
2. in-place upgrade with 2008R2 RTM, same SKU. Then apply SP1.

Make sure you have enough disk space. Hopefully, the SXS cache was cleared for a reason.

Could be other ways, but this what I'd do.

PS. you are mixing 2008 and 2008 R2. I'm assuming R2.

Assuming you already ran sfc /scannow, did it find something interesting? You can parse the SBC log to find the SFC results: findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" (found here http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html)

Seems to be a problem with the system files from the Hyper-V role.

I removed the role and rebooted.

Curt....you know the answer...even when the words about me left your mouth!

What about a restore from backup?

Out of curiosity, hoe big is the C drive?
