A Microsoft employee wrote a short introduction on Powershell, aimed at the beginning scripter and those new to powershell. Includes command cheat-sheets.

This is a very nice introduction and well illustrated. In fact, that is one of the benefits of a short form like this. Color printing is very expensive for book publishers which would make the technical books we buy even more expensive (if that's possible :-) ). But here the color illustrations are terrific. I especially like the Cheat Sheet pages at the end.

I wrote http://www.realtimenexus.com/EBMPS.htm a ways back, too - not in color :) but a free, short intro ebook.

Thanks Willem...

I'm starting to learn about it, and I know that I will start from the very beginning since I don't have knowledge on scripting yet.

Is there anyone here got a copy of the Windows PowerShell in action by Bruce Payette? What can you say about the book? I'm planning to order it from here.

I've got Bruce's book, and I quite like it. It covers a lot of under-the-hood stuff that only a PowerShell team member could write, and it does a good job of walking you through the basics as well as some fun tips for using PowerShell in interesting ways. And I say all that having co-authored "Windows PowerShell: TFM!" I think a big difference with my book is that we tried to walk through a lot more things as an admin would see them - we don't explore "under the hood" in PowerShell as much as Bruce does, but I think we spend more time covering some of the administrative tasks you can accomplish. Others have told me that the two books go very well together, which is great. But, even if you just decide to get Bruce's book, I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Hi Don.

I've already downloaded your free ebook, I also plan to supplement it with Bruce book to get a better understanding and knowledge about powershell.

Thanks Don.

Don,

I started reading your ebook, and I find it very informative especially for a newbie in powershell like me.

Thanks.

If you'd like a quick and interesting 75 minute overview and demo of PowerShell, take a look at Don's TechEd presentation at www.virtualteched.com. (You've got to drill down a bit to find it, VTechEd could be laid out a trifle better.)

I was in the audience and enjoyed it tremendously.

As I blush. Actually, on blog.sapien.com or blog.msdn.com/powershell, there are blog posts with direct links to the presentation. You're right, VTE is a bit of a labyrinth.

Hello, is it possible to publish the new link to this download please? I am attempting to understand a script you posted on AD health and can't get it to work in my test envirnoment but this is probably due to my being a newbie.

Can't find the book they mentioned 5 years ago, but there's plenty of other freebie help out there:

http://www.google.com/search?q=free%20powershell%20books (first result lists 10 books, many by top-tier PS authors)

Powershell 101 from Windows IT Pro magazine (2 parts)
http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/windows-powershell/powershell-101-lesson-1
http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/windows-powershell/powershell-101-lesson-2

PowerShell Essentials for the Busy Admin (5-part webcast series with Ed Wilson)
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/scriptcenter/powershell.aspx

Enjoy!
