There are 1 replies, with the last one on 10/11/2008 at 03:55:33 AM by ptwilliams
Quote:
> Are resource domains, say for all servers and User Domains, for storing all your users, still a recommended practice with AD 2K3 or 2K8 ?

Generally no, although there are some instances in larger organisations with multiple domains whereby a resource forest is used for Exchange, and possibly MOSS. E2K7 has been improved to work in this configuration.

> The security boundary is considered the domain, so what benefits would you gain if your have your servers, users and dev environment in the following config, besides locking down access.

The security boundary is the forest! The domain is an administrative and replication boundary at best.

Based on your example there's no benefit; quite the opposite. You cite a very unrecommended scenario.

Firstly, development should be isolated from production. A child domain for dev is plain silly. There's no reason to therefore implement an empty root, or a resource root, with an account child. That's just extra work and cost for you.

> I know AD is multi-master, but in AD aren't you still confined to a single parent and an extensible amount of "child" domains ?

At some point there can only be one parent yes, but as the tree branches out there can be multiple parents. I assume you mean root? There are limitations on # of domains but you won't get to them, even in dev.

There's a number of misconceptions in your post. I recommend re-reading Mark's AD and DNS chapters and posting whatever questions you have here if you don't mind me saying so...

Until now, I have seen three main scenarios involving Terminal Services:

1 Publishing an app or a set of apps
2 Publishing desktop for remote users (external partners or home/road offices)
3 Publishing desktop to everyone so the client doesn't matter anymore and the actual data do not leave the datacentre.

In small shops, you hardly ever find #1 where you just see the cost of a TSCAL as the cost of publishing this particular app.

Many of them started with 2 and went over to 3 in the course of time. And here the 2000 licensing made perfect sense, from an accountant's point of view: The price of a Client/Session pair remained roughly the same regardless of the client technology involved: you either went for a thick Win2K client (costing you €400, power, maintenance) or for a thin client (costing you € 300, less power, less maintenance, but an additional € 150 for a TSCAL) so your decision would be based on the technical and organisational arguments. The cost of a switch from client/server environment to a TS-based one has been the price of the servers and Windows CALs.

And that's what makes it harder to sell TS to small businesses the way it is now - it only makes sense (from an accountant's point of view) if you go thin all the way but they usually won't want to ditch their PCs just to get TS and satisfy their CFO at the same time...

I'm going crazy over this issue, need opionions.

I have OWA 2007 configured through ISA 2006 and am using Active Directory as my Authentication Validation Method on the listener. My "Authentication Delegation" is "Basic Authentication" and I'm limiting user access to "Authenticated Users". On the CAS (OWA 2007 Server)side I have my virtual directories set to "Basic" and "Integrated Authentication".

My symptom is that after logon the page loads indefinitely and then fails. Sometimes logon succeeds only to load indifinitely when I click on a folder.

My second symptom is that if I change my user access in ISA from "Authenticated Users" to just "All Users" everything works fine, no issues. The problem of course being now ISA is no longer doing the authentication, but the OWA server is doing the authentication.

These symptoms only occur over ISA and are not an issue when ISA is bypassed.

Any ideas?

When he died, I kept hearing about the Alice project and how it was used to teach students programming by having an environment where you can create a game or create a story board, and in the process learn how to program in Java in a drag and drop environment.

I got around to visiting the Alice.org website (http://www.alice.org/) and this thing is really cool! They also partnered with Electronic Arts, the gaming company, so that you can use the SIMS characters in your storyboard (althought that won't be until version 3, which will come out next summer).

Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web. Alice is a teaching tool for introductory computing. It uses 3D graphics and a drag-and-drop interface to facilitate a more engaging, less frustrating first programming experience.

One of my users brought in her laptop for me to configure for corporate VPN access. The laptop is loaded with Vista Home Basic and our VPN environment is based upon an IPSec over L2TP connection using a preshared key. I attempted to configure this, but was constantly receiving an "Error 809" message which basically was denying me a connection. After banging my head against a wall for this for the better part of two days, one of my colleagues informed me that Home Basic is not sophisticated enought to handle this type of VPN configuration. My question is whether or not Home Premium can handle this type of encryption over a VPN connection? If so, perhaps I can convince this woman to upgrade. If not, we will either have to recommend that she upgrade to Ultimate (whice would be more expensive for her) or get her a corporate laptop (which would be an unanticipated expense for the company).

Any insight on this would be appreciated.

Whether or not to apply folder redirection to administrative accounts is a question for debate. All administrators should have a non-user account too. If this is the case it might make sense to exclude folder redirection for admins, but then again it might not. I'd rather have it, and quota it, myself.

Upgrading two NT4 PDC/BDC to W2K3

There are 2 replies, with the last one on 10/09/2008 at 2:49:28 PM by lwcomputing
Quote:
It seems you are under some misunderstandings about Active Directory and NT4. They are VERY different.

First, there is no such thing as a PDC or BDC - all domain controllers are just that, DCs. There are 5 key roles - FSMO roles, one of which is a PDC Emulator, but strictly speaking that does not mean it is a PDC.

Second, you cannot make a 2000/2003 server a DC in an existing domain. The only way you can add an 2000/2003 domain controller to an existing NT4 domain is to upgrade the NT4 PDC.

If you want to go to have ANY 2000/2003 domain controllers in your existing NT4 domain, then you MUST upgrade the domain to Active Directory. That doesn't mean you have to use any of the features of Active Directory (like Group Policy; though I would certainly recommend it), but you have to implement Active Directory in at least a basic format.

You then need to understand the importance of DNS in an Active Directory domain. DNS is VITAL to a stable, efficient AD implementation. Misconfigured DNS can cause logon failures and/or delays as well as quirky problems accessing network resources. In short, your AD Domain must have at least one DNS server that supports Dynamic Updates (a 2000/2003 DNS server is typically setup) and the DC MUST point to itself for DNS (in TCP/IP Properties). Further, all clients need to point to the same DNS server and NO DOMAIN SYSTEM should include a DNS server that isn't specifically a DNS server for that domain. For external DNS resolution, you would configure forwarders on the 2000/2003 DNS server.

As for the upgrade procedure, I would start off by first creating a TEST environment. This can be done by creating an NT4 BDC in a VM and pulling it off your network. Then promote it to PDC and otherwise configure it as best you can to be the same as the existing PDC. Once you have your PDC test system setup, start by running at least one test upgrade - this will help identify unknown problems in the upgrade process as well as familiarize you with how it will work.

Once you have done the upgrade process, resolved any issues that have arisen, and are otherwise comfortable about what you will need to do, I would then create another NT 4 BDC VM and this one, burn to a DVD for archiving/backup. (Should the process fail in the production environment, this BDC can be quickly re-introduced and promoted to PDC for recovery purposes). Once you have the backup of the BDC VM, promote it to your PDC and upgrade the VM. This will help ensure the system you upgrade to Active Directory is as clean as possible and should reduce the possibility of problems.

With regards to WINS, I would probably do the latter step - having done so in larger environments in the past. Since WINS is a dynamically created database, unless you have many static entries, I would just shutdown the old system, re-assign it's IP (to be safe, prior to shutdown, CHANGE the IP of the old system in case anyone ever starts it up again) and reboot the clients.

Incidentally and to be clear, once you have an AD DC, you can only have existing NT4 BDCs and cannot add additional NT4 BDCs. Further, any attempt to promote a BDC to PDC should kill your Active Directory and you'd have to go through the process all over again.

The infrastructure master may be put on any domain controller in that domain.

Correct. It doesn't matter about GCs in the rest of the forest. All that matters is that if the IM is running on a GC in a domain in a multi-domain forest, then all other DCs in that same domain must also be GCs. If they are, there's no need to update phantoms as there aren't any. In this case the IM actually doesn't function -it checks to see if its a GC when it initiates and shuts down immediately (well after logging the event) if its on a GC. If they're not, the IM must be placed on a DC that isn't a GC.

There are 2 replies, with the last one on 10/09/2008 at 05:32:45 AM by ptwilliams
Quote:
> How could you "break" SYSVOL so you could practice fixing it?

If you want to break it to the point where your only option is to restore it simply revert to a previous snapshot. [:P]

If you want to break it for troubleshooting purposes it's not that easy. A common issue is a journal wrap. You could try and generate one of those by severing the network so that the DCs cannot communicate and then performing a huge number of file system operations on the volume that houses SYSVOL. If you perform enough modifications to different files the USN Journal will wrap, as it's a fixed size and utilises a circular logging type of mechanism. The problem here is it's not easy to cause a 512MB file to wrap. In the past, antivirus products could do this easily for you. [:P]

You could also try making a bunch of changes to the FRS replica so that the staging directoy fills up. This is pretty easy to fix but is worth doing so you can see what happens. Note I'm expecting the LAN/WAN to be down while you fill the staging directory.

Now the interesting part if the user who has the problem viewing the details turns of there exchange cache in their outlook settings they suddenly can see the detail information.

We basically tried everything but the problem remains. Any fresh ideas what might be causing this and why this is linked to the cache setting?

Most people look to move shares from one server to another, but I have a "bazillion" shares on our main file server that I need to restructure and move under a single \users\ directory. The problem I have is that I need to maintain the file date/time attributes along with the ACL on both the files folders (yes there is some cross access by users) and the ACL on the shares and I need to ensure that the share location is updated in the process. I've tried Robocopy, which doesn't seem to do it, along with NETIQ's server consolidator which doesn't recreate the share, it simply copies the files to the new structure without changing the share location. All help would be greatly appreciated as I need to do this before the end of October.

These URLs can be very important if you have clients connecting to your organization over a VPN and split tunnenling is enabled. Use the "Test E-mail AutoConfiguation" feature to see what URLs your Outlook Client sees to help you determine if the client will be able to resolve the URLs through either your VPN tunnel or public Internet. If clients cannot get to these URLs through both paths in a split tunnel you will have issues, so consider your design carefully.

It provides two levels of backup: "online" (disk-based) and "offline" (archived to tape) and works by copying differences between an initial VSS snapshot and subsequent snapshots, therefore depending on the amount of data you want to backup, as well as the frequency, and retention of non-archived data you might need a LOT of disk-based storage, i.e. you need a proper SAN.

Note. online and offline are terms I used to describe what I'm saying and are not necessarily correct terminology.

All our customers are running VMware ESX and Exchange runs just fine on this platform. Did an install on Hyper-V too but it doesn't really matter with virtualization solution you use.

By the way, you won't get "better" results in performance. Instead you have to keep in mind that VMware or Hyper-V gives a performance penalty of, let's say, 5-10%. But it will give you all the advantages of virtualisation, like hardware independence, flexibility, new disaster recovery scenarios, etcetera.

A migration to a single box Exchange 2007 server is the most simple one. Basically you have to add the new server in the existing Exchange org, enable public folder replication, move the mailboxes and remove the old server.

This is a good starting point to read: http://technet.microsoft.com/nl-nl/library/aa997617(en-us,EXCHG.80).aspx

This really helps to enhance what we once refered to as the Client server model. In that model, some of the data was processed on the client side and then updated on the server side.

More modern applications like share point based apps rely on indexing technologies to present subsets of data through the browser and these subsets are updated by the frequency of the reindexing process and the update of List of data that are extrapulated from the main databases.

Queries are often not processed on just the SQL servers but in the Web/Application servers and some on the client "Web browser" side.

This is all along way from 1998 tech that many people in the industry are stuck with in their thinking. But the more you study modern development, you become a better systems analyist.
[:)]

There are 3 replies, with the last one on 10/05/2008 at 12:45:04 PM by ptwilliams
Quote:
> Thanks for the response. You are correct - we dont need VDI. I was under the impression there are versions of the two products which are not predicated on VDI (??). I guess I need to look into them in more depth. I also need to know more about TS Gateway.

Quite possibly, I'm not familiar with any of the products and simply Google'd 'em.

Re. TS Gateway, start here:

And also look at this:

> Essentially, we are looking for the best way to deploy TS 2008, given that we need reliable USB redirection (including two way audio if possible), low latency typing, excellent print optimization (as per Thinprint, for example), ActiveSync for PDAs, easy file transfer....and (hopefully) optimized graphics. Application publishing would be very nice to have, but not essential.

So TS2k8 provides a new print mechanism. It's not thinprint, but it's free and makes things a lot easier if you've got fat client clients:

Re. your requirements:

> reliable USB redirection (including two way audio if possible)

TS gives you the audio and can redirect supported plug and play devices. What this extends to depends on what kind of stuff you've got.

> low latency typing, excellent print optimization (as per Thinprint, for example), ActiveSync for PDAs, easy file transfer....and (hopefully) optimized graphics

Unsure what you mean by LL-typing. Depending on the latency you should find RDP much better than working locally with remote documents. Graphics...well, that depends. As for PDAs I guess that comes down to whether or not they fall into the supported plug 'n' play devices. I'll have to check that...

> Our valuers are used to zipping around on their thick clients. The clerical support staff are used to working even faster, in a high pressure business where every minute counts. We've warned them that moving to TS will be a bit slower, but management want the cost and efficiency benefits while in IT we also want the SOE and ability to provide consistent support. It is really the only way to go given other plans in the company's future. We want the change to be as seamless as possible without breaking the bank....(we fully costed Citrix and decided we couldnt stretch that far).

The thing to remember is that VDI uses RDP or ICA in most cases, therefore what does a Vista/XP/SUSE VM give you that a TS can't? You can use SoftGrid/XenAppV to virtualise apps with compatibility issues 999 times out of a 1000. TS and XenApp scale far better in terms of user numbers than a VDI implementation does.

I'd approach this by looking at TS2008 properly as the primary strategy, and only branch out to alternate strategies if TS can't meet a requirement.

While I appreciate you're not talking about many users and computers, you want to see the difference in hardware with large numbers of users on TS Vs. VDI. And lets not forget the storage costs for VDI. You'll have your "image" delats loaded for each user. If you need to implement multiple different images, for different user types, this increases considerably.

TS shouldn't be much slower. In a lot of cases it's faster as the server infrastructure and data are local, to the TS.

What I mean is there are several positives about having a strategy, with an automated technical solution, that essentially periodically randomises the local admin password of every system in the domain(s). The big decision is whether you track the passwords in a secure manner, and provide the info. to highly priveleged users, or if you leave it completely unknown and implement an on-demand reset option should you need local admin access. This, however, usually requires a GINA modification and also requires that the machine be online...

I intended this one:

But I'm not sure if that will do what you're after either. Check it out, and if it's no good I'll go through the steps that you need to take with you.

The second is simple but that, and the links on that page, should give you a good starting point on how to proceed if taking the .NET route. I've not looked at the S.DS.AM namespace yet so can't comment on whether or not it will give you what you want out of the box. I hope it does, as it's been touted to me as the be all and end all for this kind of thing.

The crux of the issue, and why it might not be as well documented as it could be, is that you have to perform a number of queries and you can't just use a GC as a GC doesn't hold the domain local membership so you have to query at least the GC, plus a DC in each domain.

I'll try and dig out my notes and post some additional info. for you over the next couple of days.

Hi Guys
I need a bit of help with what I expect is a simple issue, but I cant see a solution even after spending hours on Google looking.

Regarding Static Data Cascading Combo box

I dont want to fetch data from tables to display in the combo boxes just static set options. Let me Explain.

We have a database that organises orders and deliveries for an AVON Rep.

A customer selects when they would like deleivery and we put that in the system currently with two combo boxes, Dayoftheweek and timeoftheday, fairly simple they consist of;

Dayoftheweek=
Sunday
Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
Saturday

And
Timeoftheday=
Morning
Afternoon
Evening

They are put in the customer table as its updated for the AVON campaign they order on, via two simple combo boxes, This required two distinct actions, not very elegant really.

I was hoping to use a cascading combo box that would show the timeoftheday when a dayoftheweek is clicked on. Like;

Tuesday..Morning
.............Afternoon
.............Evening

(the dots just space it as spaces get removed in the post)

and they would then be updatedinto the table when the timeoftheday is clicked.

It would appear to be almost impossible without adding tables and writebacks and requeries and on and on.

Any thoughts please.
Jerry.

Hi all,

I need help, some ideas, a drink, anything. :)

I have a two-node 2K3 x64 cluster with shared storage on a FC SAN. Both the servers and SAN are HP, and roughly three years old. The cluster is doing file & print, nothing fancy, and is lightly loaded. The configuration of the cluster has not changed in some time, other than MS patches, which are up to date.

Wednesday afternoon, I added a new drive to the SAN and initiated an expansion of the array to which both this cluster and another cluster are attached. The second cluster is and has been working perfectly. I'm not sure if the expansion is relevent or not.

Thursday afternoon, one of the disk resources failed. The underlying volumes on the SAN were fine according to the SAN controller. Other disk resources located in the same array on the same SAN continued to work. There was no indication at all as to why the failure occurred.

I tried to bring the failed resouce back online with no luck. Each server was rebooted, one at a time, etc. Oddly, I noticed the SAN showing an "unknown" device connected but offline; there is no way another device was connected at any point. Eventually called HP, who walked me through the usual waste of time routine of checking drivers, etc. They pretty much blew me off and told me to power down everything connected to the SAN, reboot the controller, and bring everything back up. As crazy as that was, I did so, and still had the same problem. I was then told it was a Microsoft problem, as the hardware was fine. I got kicked out of the building, so headed home to VPN in and continue troubleshooting.

By now it was midnight, I sucked it up and called MS after-hours support, put the $515 on my own credit card, and was told to expect a callback in two hours. While waiting, I happened to try increasing the "pending timeout" on the failed disk resource to 360 seconds from its setting of 180. Amazingly, that allowed me to bring the failed resource online on node #1 of the cluster. Node #2 was physically on but otherwise non-responsive, so I had no choice but to leave it like that. 2.5 hours later, I had not heard back from MS and I called to cancel the ticket.

After four hours of sleep, I got back to the office and was relieved that at least the remaining node was working properly and everything was up and running. The SAN was no longer showing the "unknown" device, so I thought perhaps the complete reboot had helped things out. I left node #2 in its vegitative state all day, afraid to touch anything. Eventually, after most of the staff had gone home, I brought it back up. At first things seemed fine.

Not long afterwards, my monitoring system started to pick up a lot of degraded cluster condition traps. I'm not entirely sure how to describe what was happening. The cluster resources were not visibly bouncing from node to node, but they were intermittently becoming unavialable for brief periods of time. For instance, trying to access a share would sometimes work normally; othertimes it would take a minute or so for the share to come up. Once it had, further access would be OK for a few minutes and then the cycle would repeat.

I shut down the cluster service on node #2, and right now everything is fine, except that I have no idea what's going on. I can't find anything in the event logs of either server that indicate a problem, and I don't see anything obvious in the cluster log - not that I know what to look for.

HP has been useless as noted earlier. And while I can call MS back and pursue things with them, I can't shake the feeling this could be a hardware problem. I don't think it's the SAN per se, as I have a number of other servers connected that are and have been working throughout. But maybe a bad FC host adapter? No clue. I'd really appreciate any ideas, thoughts or even wild guesses. Anything to give me a direction in which to go.

Thanks much,
James
