Anyone experiencing slow logons with W7?
This is with a user that does not have an existing profile (so W7 needs to create one).
Oh yes, by "slow", I mean around 30 seconds.
XP, in comparison, is more like 5-10, maybe 15.
Yes, that too is with no existing user profile.
Since existing profiles are eliminated one way or another (by Deep Freeze on the XPs and by a GP setting on the W7s) this is an issue.
I've read somewhere that a solid background has something to do with this. I'm hoping this is fixed in SP1 (which I'm going to install) or try modifying the background with a GP setting.

And I would uncheck that option but some people may save pictures or music for legitimate reasons and we'd want it to end up on the server rather than lost.
That's right. Some people cannot remember where they were working on the file that got lost, which, after all, is conceivable if you have several labs each with a dozen plus computers. |

Should be able to go through group policy log and see where it's taking the longest at. Been awhile since I've looked at them but I vaguely rem logon was slow because of a "My Picutres" or "My Music" redirection. |

Right, moving away from Deep Freeze (good product however, but additional cost and seems less necessary with Vista and W7 improved security), I am using Group Policy to delete profiles after x days.
So profiles are recreated quite often, if not every day, just about.
I tried this on another computer, brand new and it was closer to 20-25 seconds. Close to acceptable.
Maybe with solid state drives... it would be 10-15 again (like with XP). |

Have any of you guys ever seen xperf? I'll just say it again: if you want to know what's going on during boot and logon, this is the way to check it out. If you have never seen it, spend half a day. Or better yet, plug Mark to do a newsletter. |

We've been dealing with this since we started using Vista. 7 is slightly better, but not by much.
For what it's worth, I'd be happy with 30 seconds. We're more in the 90 second range, although I do have a lot of GPOs and a number of login scripts running.
We don't however throw out the profiles immediately - moved away from Deep Freeze years ago - so it is not an every-login problem in most cases.

You can hurry things up If you would redirect every folder, without the checkmark to copy it from the original location |

You have a situation where every logon is an initial one. That's unusual, so you should not be too surprised that few people share your experience. After all, what is a one-time 30 second delay (assuming it's not something unique in your environment)?
That said, _the_ way to troubleshoot this is through xperf.

This is still a problem.
Am I the only person that has noticed this?
Has anyone else been able to accelerate the initial logon time for W7 SP1?
Yes, after that first logon and for as long as the profile exists, logon duration is acceptable.
As we intend to deploy more and more W7 (finances permitting), we need to resolved this.
People with Macs at home think they have the answer... |

SP1 never solved this (came across this thread and saw that I did not report back).
Looks like the answer is: "If quick logons are that important to you, then you should stick with Windows XP. The Windows 7 default profile is simply too bloated to configure for the user in 15 seconds or less." |

Install from Windows Updates failed. Wasted a great deal of my time. Nothing useful in EV. So I'm downloading full version and I'll try that. |

Roxio CD/DVD creator
Foxit Reader
Flash
Java
Symantec AV (no ill effect on XP machines)
I'm about to install SP1. We'll see what happens. |

Is this on a lab machine or anything like that? We had issues with this in our labs, and it came down to 3rd party applications sticking crap in the default profile which would have to be copied everytime a new profile was created. |
