Hi,

Not sure whether you've noticed yet, but we have a bunch of new speakers for the Minasi Conference this year.

Steve Riley is coming back for a talk on Cloud.
Michael B. Smith is doing our Exchange and AD migration session
Laura E. Hunter is covering ADFS v2.

All in all it's going to be awesome!

So take another look at www.minasiconference.com and even if you can't make it, help out with the publicity!

Thanks
Nathan

Jim, personally I rather like some of yours too! Especially hopping around on Concorde!

Steve, I always thought you must have some interesting tales of travels to tell. Make a fun read!

Some rough numbers over past dozen years: 400 flights, 1,500,000 miles, one 24-page passport filled, one 96-page passport filled, 35 countries entered, 60 cities visited.

On average, one out of every five trips involved some kind of "intimate encounter" with security/passport/customs automatons. That's 20% -- certainly far above what would rightly be considered "random."

I'll give you two examples of the worst.

One time, returning home from a five-week trip to Asia, the CBP drone wandering the luggage area noticed the beautiful collection of mosquito bites on the back of my left arm. She wrote a big red "H" on my 6059B form. When I asked why she said "because I can do whatever I want." My bag arrived and I walked toward the exit. The luggage interview robot saw the "H" and said "go over there," pointing to a screening area. At the area was the previous woman who marked my form, along with someone from the Michigan health department (I landed in Detroit). He asked about the bites, I said I ran into a swarm in Bangkok, I'm allergic, thus the bites are large, I carry doxycycline in case of malaria, all's good though. Satisfied, he wandered off. But not big H woman. Her next words: "No one goes to Asia on business for five weeks." She proceeded to examine all the photos on my digital camera and demanded that I log into my computer. Then she and another "expert" spent 2 1/2 hours examining my computer for child porn! They even tried to pry naughties from a microSD card adapter that had no memory in it, heh, what morons. Of course they found nothing. During the "investigation" the woman asked what I did for a living -- I said I'm a security consultant. She handed me my laptop and then offered this promise: "You're hiding it. We can't find it but we know it's there. You better be careful next time you come through Detroit." I missed the flight to meet my family in Orlando. I was so damn mad I'm getting pissed just typing it here.

Another time I was in the Frankfurt airport going through the separate security line for US-bound flights. First I walked through a metal detector. No beep. Then I got wanded. No beep. Then some guy started a thorough pat down -- and I mean thorough. When he grabbed my dangly bits I smacked his hand away -- no one, I mean no one, touches me there without my express invitation. I'm surprised I escaped that encounter without any further delay.

Lesson to learn: all this intrusive screening is training an entire generation of people to accept government intrusion into a person's physical body. This should be an embarrassment to all of us, regardless of your political leanings.

In that case maybe they think it came from China.

It's probably classed as a weapon due to encryption?

LOL I know Steve. Leaving Seattle after the summit was very frustrating - check in without actually being checked in until the are closing the door and call your name. And then spend 5 hours in Chicago with nothing but a McDonalds to sit in.

And of course, more often than not, my bags disappear when heading over to Norfolk, VA.

The good news is the end of time isn't that far away.

Let's hope the British Airways cabin crew union don't mess things up with their strikes.
